Slow Cookery Class and My Sunday Crock Pot Chuck Roast
February 22nd, 2008 . by DebbieFor those of you who are like me and only use my crock pot for 2 different recipes, my eyes have seen the light! I was so amazed at what you can do in a slow cooker. We just had our Slow Cookery Class and learned so many things from Christine. This is definitely a class we need to do a sequel for. We tasted several yummy meal recipes that were easy to fix and tasted so good. But then there was dessert! I’ve heard of people using their slow cooker to make desserts, but I didn’t think it would be very impressive. Can I just say, I couldn’t get enough of the Bananas Foster!
The extent of my crock pot skills end at my Roast on Sundays. I like to make my roast in the crock pot on Sundays, because it can tend itself and always smells so good when we come home from church. If you’ve never done a roast in the crock pot you should try it. Here is what I do:
I like to use a Chuck Roast, I like the flavor and it always turns out very tender. I trim as much of the fat as I can, for obvious reasons. Season all sides of the Roast with salt and pepper. Then I brown my roast on all sides, by putting just a bit of olive oil in a pan on the stove. Make sure the pan gets nice and hot before adding your roast. This will take 10 to 15 minutes. Browning your roast will add flavor to the gravy.
After I have browned the meat, I put it in the slow cooker. I spread a can of cream of mushroom soup over the roast and pour 1/2 can of water in the pot. Then I sprinkle an envelope of dry onion soup mix on top of the roast. Let it cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours.
Remove the roast from the crock pot and use the liquid for gravy. I just mix 2 Tbs. of white flour with cold water just enough to make a runny paste. Then I add it to the liquid and let it cook on HIGH for 5 minutes. Makes great gravy.
Well, that is about all I do with my crock pot. What do you do? Write me and tell me what you like to do with your slow cooker. Do you have a favorite slow cooker recipe that you can share? I have shared a recipe for Chicken Parmesan from our class that is listed below. Try it and let me know what you think, do you like it?
